WMHS Legacy Society

In 2018, the WMHS Foundation formed the WMHS Legacy Society, underscoring a critical need for planned giving to sustain Western Maryland Health System Foundation in perpetuity. With a goal to realize 20 bequests by the end of the calendar year, the Foundation exceeded all expectations, securing 27 charter members by the close of 2018. Those gifts with a declared value — only a small percentage of the overall endowment — comprise more than $700,000 in future giving to Western Maryland Health System Foundation. The majority of gifts declare a percentage of the donor's estate upon passing, after taking care of family and commitments.

"I think it might be easier to give a Legacy gift than to write a check today," said Liz Rhodes, broker/owner of Coldwell Banker and Robison Skidmore Appraisal Services. "Most of us have budgets and bills and tires to buy." She and her husband Jeff Rhodes, Cumberland city administrator, made the decision to join the Legacy Society as charter members as a natural extension of their values. "We want to be remembered as people who love our family and love our Lord, people who were kind to others and tried to leave the world a better place," she said.
